What is Radon?
Radon is an invisible, radioactive gas that is colorless, tasteless, and odorless. Radon is undetectable unless you test for it. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
Radon exists naturally and is formed when uranium in soil, water and rock breaks down and gets into the air or groundwater.
How Does Radon Get Into Your Home?
Radon can get into homes from the ground via holes or cracks in the foundation. Radon has been found in homes and buildings all over the United States.
Erie Environmental provides OSHA – and NESHAPS – compliant, AHERA-certified Radon testing and removal services for residential and commercial buildings, industrial sites, municipalities, schools, and colleges. During radon abatement, we fully contain the radon and strictly follow all safety guidelines.
Radon Removal Steps
The first step to removing radon from your home is to get an initial radon reading from a licensed radon removal company. A radon mitigation company uses professional radon testing tools to test for radon and will be able to get accurate radon test results.
Furthermore, a radon mitigation company monitors radon levels throughout the radon removal.
If your radon test result is 4 pCi/L or higher, The EPA recommends that you to reduce your home’s radon levels.
The age of your home and Soil Type is a factor
Homes and other buildings that are older (built pre-1970s) and typically use less than ideal building practices that unfortunately trap the radon inside.
The type of soil your home was built on also plays a factor in whether you have excess radon. Unlike gravel which allows airflow, wet sand or earth prevents airflow, which also traps radon.
Planning and Laying Pipes: The Radon Mitigation System
We thoroughly test the radon removal system to ensure it is creating the necessary pressure to remove radon. We do longterm radon testing to ensure that the radon levels stay low after the radon mitigation.
